Bar shooting leaves 1 man dead

November 08, 2009 @ 04:22 PM

HUNTINGTON — A shooting that occurred overnight inside and outside of Club Babylon at 831 4th Ave., left one man dead and three others injured, according to the Huntington Police Department.

Police arrived on the scene around 3 a.m. Sunday to find several armed individuals as well as three men with injuries, Police Chief Skip Holbrook said during a news conference Sunday afternoon.

An HPD officer shot and injured one man after police say he pointed a gun toward the officer. The man — Joe Jermaine Porter, 30 of Huntington — died about 6 a.m. Sunday while being treated at a local hospital, Holbrook said.

Three other men were wounded in the exchange of gunfire before officers arrived. They are:

Reginald Marbury, 25 of Huntington, originally from Michigan, shot once in the left knee. He is still being treated at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Sontezz Lomax, 29 of Huntington, shot in the right shoulder and right buttocks. He was treated and released. He is currently in custody on an unrelated charge.

Christopher Lewis, 28 of Thurmond, Ohio, shot once in the left leg. He is being treated at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Holbrook did not release the name of officer who shot Porter. HPD will conduct an internal investigation into the shooting, he said. The officer will be put on administrative leave, as is custom for officer-involved shootings.

Fourth Avenue between 8th and 9th streets is blocked off to traffic and pedestrians so investigators can process the crime scene.

HPD received assistance from the West Virginia State Police, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives , Federal Bureau of Investigation , Drug Enforcement Administration and Cabell County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. They also received assistance from the Cabell County Sheriff’s Department and the  Marshall University Police Department.
