Couple open Marco's Pizza location in Huntington

HUNTINGTON -- Mike and Bettie Chapman always wanted to go into business together. Trouble was, they both already had good jobs, Mike as a district manager for Walmart in Cincinnati and Bettie as department administrator at University Eye Surgeons in Huntington.

One of them had to change gears. So after 21 years, Bettie left her job so the couple could open the first Marco's Pizza in West Virginia. It's located at 110 5th Ave., in the former Jolly Pirate Donuts location, and it opens at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27.

With a great location that can deliver to 75 percent of Huntington, and with fresh ingredients, the Chapmans anticipate the restaurant will do well and hope to open four more in the Huntington-Charleston market in the next five years.

Marco's is the fastest growing pizza chain in the United States, they said. There are 330 stores in 24 states.

"It's authentic Italian pizza," Mike Chapman said. "We're a gourmet pizza at a value price."

The ingredients are not frozen, they said. Dough is made fresh daily, the sauce is made fresh in the restaurant with a secret combination of spices, and Marco's uses a blend of three different cheeses. The restaurant also sells subs, salads, wings and more. It has call-in and online ordering for deliveries, and it offers catering and dine-in options.

The building has been gutted and has new floors, walls, ceilings, kitchen equipment, furnishings, landscaping and more. The restaurant employs about 30 people and will be managed by Kory Smoot.

"We think this is the best location in Huntington," Mike Chapman said.

The Chapmans now split time between Huntington and Cincinnati. Mike, a Huntington East graduate, and Bettie, a Barboursville High graduate, have been married 27 years and have two grown daughters.
