Maryland company to open second location at The Point

July 16, 2008 @ 11:05 PM

SOUTH POINT, Ohio -- A Baltimore, Md., based company is opening a second location at The Point, a South Point industrial park. The company plans to hire 40 workers immediately and hopes to grow to between 150 and 175 jobs within three years.

Merciers Inc., a family owned company from Harmans, Md., does vegetation control for industries and railroads. The company bought a 4.75 acre parcel in the industrial park near County Road 1, said Bill Dingus, executive director of the Lawrence Economic Development Corporation.

The jobs start out at $12 per hour plus benefits and a 401 k benefits, he said.

"We're happy to be coming to Lawrence County," Craig Merciers said Wednesday. "We have been in the area for some time. We were looking at a location in Ohio or West Virginia and decided on The Point. We've been moving in equipment all day."

The company will build a 10,000-square-foot building adjacent to Quality Carriers Inc., Dingus said. "They plan to open a local office within the week," he said. "They hope to have 100 employees by this time next year. They plan to hire local people to work for them on the road."

Merciers said the company will pay higher wages for those with a commercial drivers license or a pesticide applications license. "We will do our own training for those with no experience," he said.

Collene Artrip, a Lawrence County resident, is the regional manager for the company's new location. Anyone interested in applying for a job can call her at (443) 694-0079.
