Tri-State in Training: Goodwill set to offer class on Microsoft Word starting Aug. 31

MICROSOFT WORD 2007: Goodwill offers a class on Microsoft Word, beginning Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 1005 Virginia Ave. The four-week class will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays. The entire course costs $100 and will include typing and editing text, working with fonts, font colors and sizes, using copy and paste, enhancing documents with clip art and tables, using templates for brochures and flyers, and how to use mail merge to send out letters and to address envelopes. Goodwill offers a fully equipped computer lab, instructional handouts, and a CD-Rom of interactive Word 2007 files and exercises the student can use at home.

MEDICAL OFFICE TRAINING: Enrollment is under way for individuals interested in pursuing a career as a medical administrative office assistant. The 10-month adult day program at the Cabell County Career Technology Center emphasizes training in such areas as medical terminology and medical billing/coding, as well as courses in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint; data entry; and office procedures. Internships at area businesses and hospitals are required during the program.

 

Class sizes allow for individualized instruction as needed.

 

Graduated seniors (class of 2010 from Cabell, Wayne, Lincoln, and Mason counties) may apply for the “tuition incentive” program. Financial aid is also available for those who qualify. For more information, call 304-528-5106.

 

MACHINISTS TECHNOLOGY, WELDING: Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing (RCBI) is offering classes scheduled to begin Aug. 23 in Huntington. They include its Machinist Technology Program and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW).

 

RCBI’s Machinist Technology Program, the only one of its kind in West Virginia, is accredited by the National Institute for Metalworking Skills. An option in the program enables individuals to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in Technical Studies from a local community college, such as Mountwest (formerly Marshall) Community & Technical College in Huntington, Potomac State College of West Virginia University in Keyser or West Virginia Northern Community College in Wheeling.

 

The RCBI welding class is a comprehensive one that includes both classroom instruction and hands-on training on the shop floor, with intensive student-instructor interaction. The class can be taken independently to prepare the student to test for state certification in Gas Metal Arc Welding or as part of RCBI’s comprehensive welding program that also includes Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding and Stick Pipe Welding.

ACCOUNTING: Basic Accounting with QuickBooks will be presented by the Women’s Business & Training Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, in Charleston. It will be in the fourth floor conference room at 405 Capitol St.

 

Topics include measuring business profitability; tracking cost of goods sold; entering and writing checks; tracking payroll liabilities; using registers; invoicing customers; tracking and paying sales tax; and customizing reports.

OSHA: The OSHA 30-hour Construction course will be presented by the West Virginia Division of Labor from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, Aug. 17-19, at 405 Capitol St. in Charleston. Completion of the 10-hour course within a six-month time frame from the 10-hour course’s opening date is a prerequisite. Successful completion will result in the issuance of a certificate and a 30-hour OSHA card. Cost is $80 per person, and pre-registration is required. The course offers basic academics, math, spelling, English, proofreading, filing and the specialties of medical terminology, medical acronyms, medical billing and coding, Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook 2007 (Basic), and Windows Vista.

 

Students will have the opportunity to complete an internship as well as job readiness training. Classes will be at 1005 Virginia Ave., Huntington. Qualifying students will receive 12 hours of college credit at Mountwest Community and Technical College upon completion.

LIFE SKILLS TRAINING: Goodwill Industries, in partnership with the Weed and Seed Program at Barnett Center, is offering a series of workshops designed to teach the skills needed to find a job and earn valuable experience in the process.

 

The series, called “You’ve Got the Look,” will teach how to search and apply for a job, offer interviewing tips, and provide the skills to succeed on the job.

 

The class will be offered each Monday and Friday from 2-3:30 p.m. and is provided at no cost to the individual.
