Job expo for vets planned

HUNTINGTON -- The VetSuccess Employment Expo is planned for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, at Mountwest Community and Technical College. Job-seeking veterans and potential employers are invited to participate in the event at 2205 5th Street Road in Huntington.

The event will feature employers from federal, state and local agencies and private employers, giving veterans an opportunity to network with an array of companies. Preceding the expo will be a free class from 8 to 10 a.m. about resume development and how to network during an expo. Veterans are urged to dress professionally, bring resumes, DD-214s and their Veterans Preference Letter if available.

For employers, registration is free, and there will be a class from 9 to 10 a.m. on hiring incentives for private sector employers, the non-paid work experience program for federal employers, the no-cost interactive veteran employment website, supported OJT/Apprenticeships, and other Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment options.

Employers nominated for Guard, Reserve support

CHARLESTON -- Thirteen West Virginia Guard and Reserve members nominated their employers for the 2013 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, according to a news release.

The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense operational committee, received 2,899 nominations nationwide. The Freedom Award is the Department of Defense's highest recognition for employers supporting employees serving in the Guard and Reserve.

West Virginia nominations include the Charleston Police Department, two offices of the West Virginia National Guard in Charleston, Iron Workers Local 301 in Charleston, Federal Bureau of Investigation in Clarksburg, Valley Medical Transport/Valley Health in Keyser, West Virginia National Guard Joint Interagency Training Education Center in Kingwood, VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, Action Facilities Management in Morgantown, TeleTech Services Corp. in Morgantown, MedExpress Urgent Care in Parkersburg, TMG Services in Saint Albans and Pfizer in Willow Island.

The winners will be announced this summer.
