CAMC plans $40M cancer center
CHARLESTON -- Charleston Area Medical Center says it's planning a $40 million cancer center at the site of the old Watt Powell ballpark in Charleston.
The Charleston Gazette reports that the CAMC Foundation paid the University of Charleston $2.1 million for the rest of the 5-acre parcel in the Kanawha City neighborhood. The university had planned to build an athletic facility, but CAMC officials said Thursday that the school dropped the idea.
CAMC says it's going to start construction in 2012 and the center should be ready to treat cancer patients by 2014. The facility will replace the current cancer center on the campus of Memorial Hospital.
