Seneca Ridge offers new rental properties within city limits
HUNTINGTON -- Looking out the windows of Seneca Ridge TownHomes, you might see deer or a wild turkey. And yet these new rental properties are within the city limits of Huntington, not so far from Interstate 64 and nestled near the Garden Farms neighborhood, off of Norwood Avenue.
The new properties are an effort by developer Bob Bowen to give residents the feel of a private home without the responsibilities that go along with it, he said.
What makes these upscale, two- and three-bedroom properties feel like home are their private driveways and entrances, washers and dryers in each unit, not to mention basements.
"It's storage or a 'man cave' or whatever," Bowen said. "This kind of storage space is a couple hundred dollars a month if you had to go out and pay for it. This is a real attribute to the property."
Some of the Seneca Ridge units have one-car garages. And pets are permitted. Rent prices range from $975 to $1,280 per month.
Bowen said he took special care with fire codes and safety. Each unit has two-hour fire walls, which are also important for security and soundproofing.
When the entire project is finished, there will be 31 units, and 16 of them are finished now, he said.
Four of the 31 will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Those units will be reserved for senior citizens and tenants with disabilities.
They have bathrooms with roll-in showers. In the kitchen, there are lower countertops and stoves, and turn-around space for those in wheelchairs. They also have lower washer and dryers, special carpet for easier wheelchair movement, and there is access to the main floor from the outside.
Below that main floor, there are other rooms, including another full bathroom below.
One of those properties is occupied now, and one is available, Bowen said. The other two soon will be constructed.
Bud and Becky Ross live in an ADA-compliant unit and are pleased, Bud Ross said.
"It's wonderful, outstanding," Bud Ross said. "He had the government standards, but he went beyond them to get what she needed."
Ray Rideout is another resident of Seneca Ridge and he described it as "quality housing at a reasonable price.
"They put a lot of thought, time and effort into the planning of it," he said. "It's nice to look out the window and see deer and wild turkey. And the neighbors have been great. Everyone talks, but it's nice and quiet."
