Tri-State in Training: Basic accounting workshop scheduled for July 7

BASIC ACCOUNTING WITH QUICKBOOKS: The West Virginia Small Business Development Center at Marshall Community and Technical College will offer a Basic Accounting with QuickBooks workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, at 348 15th St., Huntington.

Roberta Weaver-Johnson of Bagby and Weaver, CPAs will conduct the workshop. Topics include measuring business profitability, tracking cost of goods sold, tracking payroll, creating budgets, using registers, recording loan payments, tracking and paying sales tax, and using Quick Reports. This will be a hands-on class with computers. Participants will receive a workbook to take home.

Registration is required. The fee is $199. To register, call Kathleen Thornton at 304-399-1040. Payment may be made at the door.

HEALTHY FINANCES: Huddleston Bolen LLP and the City of Huntington's Weed and Seed Program are partnering to hold a series of free, community-based "Healthy Finances" workshops. The workshops will discuss financial topics such as maintaining good credit, avoiding credit card debt and estate planning.

The workshops are open to the public and will be held at the Weed and Seed Office, 1524 10th Ave., in Huntington. Each workshop will begin with a free cookout at 5:30 p.m. for attendees. Free child care and activities for children also will be provided.

The schedule for the workshops is:

6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, Avoiding Credit Card Debt.

6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, Estate Planning for Everyone.

HOMEBUYER EDUCATION: Goodwill Industries' Consumer Credit Counseling Service is offering Homebuyer Education Classes.

Classes will be July 25, Aug. 29, Sept. 19, Oct. 17, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12, so long as there are at least three registrants signed up for each class. The seminars will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the conference room of Goodwill's offices at 1102 Memorial Blvd. in Huntington.

The class will cover assessing your homebuyer readiness, budgeting and credit, the value of homebuyer inspections, financing, mortgage instruments and loan closings, as well as keeping proper records for home maintenance.

The class fee is based on a sliding scale, and participants must bring proof of income to the class.
