Local company makes candles that burn without harmful smoke

HUNTINGTON -- If you're looking for a candle that is natural, look no further then the soy candle. Jamie L. Goad and Angela G. Footo began Soy Scents six years ago in the warmth of their kitchen.

"I saw soy candles while I was on vacation and I went straight home and told Jamie this is what we were going to do," said Footo.

Footo and Goad's soy candles are a work of art that they have perfected over the years. The candles come in many unique scents such as Beach smells, Butter Cream, or a rich woodsy scent called Autumn Lodge.

The candles also come in several shapes and sizes. They offer paddy melts, heart shaped candles, or large and small round candles, and even a travel size candle. Also, Goad and Footo love to work with customizing candles and will gladly fill specialty containers brought to them by customers.

"We have poured candles for bride's maid gifts and we also create custom labeling for them," said Goad.

Due to the fact that they are made of 100 percent natural soy, soy candles burn without giving off harmful smoke.

The wick is made from 100 percent cotton and no harsh dyes are added to the candles, making it simple of clean off of clothing and carpets. Also, unlike regular candles they do not build up black residue in the glass container.

"Soy candles are a great green product made of natural ingredients," said Footo.

Perhaps the most appealing fact about soy candles is that they stay cool while burning. Instead of being too hot to carry around, the glass container stays cool on the outside, making it safe for children to be around.

Another advantage to the soy candle is that it is a perfect moisturizer for dry skin. Once the soy has begun melting, fingers can be dipped in it to apply to hands and feet.

"Melted soy wax is well known as a healing cuticle cream and moisturizing lotion for dry skin. In fact, the liquid from the melted candle can be applied directly to the skin," said Goad.

While Soy Scents does not have an official store front, Goad and Footo have wisely chosen a number of local locations for their candles to be sold. Tamarack, Green Briar, and Eggplant are just some of the retailers who sell Soy Scents. Also, all the candles can be found and ordered from their Web site.

Over the years, Goad and Footo have enjoyed great success with local fundraisers. They have aided Cabell Midland High School, Show Choirs, Soccer Teams, and the Boy Scouts in raising money. Soy Scents is always looking for opportunities to help their community and share their irresistible candles.

This year, Goad and Footo have made a resolution to help their business grow by pouring more of their free time into Soy Scents. With the onset of two new clients in the month of January, they are both feeling very optimistic about the success of Soy Scents. They are currently looking for outlets in Ashland, Hurricane, or Teays Valley to offer their candles.

"We've found that though our candles our candles will sell themselves but they won't walk. That's where our work comes in," said Footo.

If you're interested in buying a Soy Scents candle you can visit one of the above retailers or visit their Web site at www.soyscentswv.com. For orders you can also call 304-733-2988 or 304-736-9930.
