Unemployment down in all W.Va. counties
CHARLESTON — Workforce West Virginia says all 55 of the state’s counties reported a drop in unemployment in July as the statewide jobless rate decreased from 5.5 percent to 4.2 percent.
In Cabell County, the unemployment rate dropped from 5.0 percent in June to 4.2 percent in July — slightly lower than the July 2007 rate of 4.3 percent.
Putnam and Kanawha both showed drops to 3.1 percent and 3.3 percent, respectively, both under the statewide average. Wayne County showed a substantial drop to 4.8 percent, but that was higher than the 4.7 percent record in July 2007.
Monongalia County had the lowest unemployment rate in July with 2.5 percent, which is also lower than the same period last year when the county reported a rate of 3.2 percent.
Mason County’s 7.4 percent jobless rate was the highest but it dropped from 8.4 percent in June.
Overall, 20 counties reported better than average unemployment rates.
