MCTC offers deckhand basic training Aug. 5-11

DECKHAND TRAINING: Mountwest Community & Technical College is offering deckhand basic training Monday-Sunday, Aug. 5-11, through the Inland Waterways Academy. At the completion of this seven-day training, participants will be equipped with the skills and certification needed to join the maritime industry.

MEDICAL OFFICE ASSISTANT: Enrollment is underway for individuals interested in pursuing a career as a medical office assistant. A 10-month adult day program is offered at the Cabell County Career Technology Center covering medical office procedures, medical billing, Microsoft Office, data entry, and job skill preparation. Internships at area businesses/hospitals are required.

Orientation is at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12. Call 304-528-5106 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. to speak to a Career Center representative, or call 304-743-0323 for more information.

There is a tuition fee for the class, and class size allows for individualized instruction as needed. Graduated seniors from the class of 2013 from Cabell, Wayne, Lincoln, and Mason counties may attend this program on a tuition-free waiver. Financial aid is also available for those who qualify.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST: The Apprenticeship for Child Development Specialist Program (ACDS) will start a new first semester class in Cabell County on Thursday, Aug. 15, at Huntington High School. The program is four semesters long and consists of 300 hours of classroom training and 3,200 to 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.

Apprentices must be 18 years old and working at least 20 hours/week directly with young children ages birth to 8. Examples of such employment include child care centers, family child care and facilities, Headstart, after school programs, private and public Pre-K and kindergarten programs.

If interested in attending, contact Sherrie Barrett or Jennifer Conkle at 304-523-0433 to register for classes. Call and preregister before attending classes, as space is limited. A mandatory orientation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12, at River Valley Child Developments Services at 611 7th Ave., Huntington.
