Jean Tarbett Hardiman: Beard Mortuary opens new child care service

Dec. 12, 2012 @ 11:52 PM

Beard Mortuary at 3001 3rd Ave. in Huntington has opened a new kid's room and parent's lounge for families to use during services.

"We have free babysitting during visitations and funerals so that parents can participate without worrying about their children," said Shane Ritchie, Beard Mortuary Licensee-In-Charge, said in a release.

"We also have a video feed into the parents lounge so that those who need to be with their children can still watch the service."

Ritchie said the funeral home will have other new updates in the coming year, as it plans to remodel its facilities to better serve families and the community.

WHITE WAY: White Way Launderers and Cleaners is once again having its annual coat drive to help keep people of all ages warm this winter. Community members are invited to donate used coats through Dec. 21. White Way will clean the coats and, this year, will be donating them to local churches, which will distribute them through their own charities.

White Way is located at 1001 Hal Greer Boulevard.

VALVOLINE EXPRESS CARE: A new express auto care business is open at 15 Washington Ave.

It offers "all quick, convenient automotive services," co-owner David Nisbet said. That includes full-service oil changes within 15 minutes, brake work and minor repairs. It is also going through the paperwork to become a West Virginia inspection station.

This will be the third Valvoline Express Care location for the owners, Nisbet and Larry Wood. The first two are South Point and Proctorville, Ohio.

The Huntington location opened a couple months ago after major renovations because the place had gotten rundown, Nisbet said.

"We cleaned this lot up, painted the whole building," he said. "We had to start from scratch here, but we're very excited to be here."

It's open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

YEAGER AIRPORT: Spirit Airlines has moved up the start dates for its 2013 seasonal service between Charleston and Myrtle Beach. Two weekly nonstop flights between Myrtle Beach and Yeager Airport in Charleston start March 2, 2013, with service increasing to three weekly flights on April 25, 2013.

PAINTED COW GALLERY: The Painted Cow Gallery in Louisa, Ky., is having its 5th annual open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, featuring personal appearances by artists Harley Fannin and Andrea Prince, as well as price reductions on paintings. Guests can enjoy refreshments and a free original watercolor print by Maureen Dosier, just for coming in.

The gallery is located across the street from the Lawrence County Courthouse on Main Cross. Learn more at by visiting paintedcowgallery.com.
