Streamlined Sales Tax group to meet in W.Va.

August 04, 2008 @ 11:15 PM

CHARLESTON -- West Virginia's Capital City will host the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board for a three-day conference in September.

West Virginia is one of 22 states that are members of the organization, and about 150 members of the governing board, business advisory council and state and local advisory council will gather at the Embassy Suites in Charleston. They will study and make necessary amendments to the streamlined sales tax agreement under design and in use today.

"By working together, the members aim to promote a streamlined sales tax system for the 21st Century among the states," State Tax Commissioner Christopher G. Morris said in a press release.

Currently out-of-state sellers are not required to collect West Virginia sales tax on sales to West Virginia consumers, but in-state sellers are. The streamlined sales tax agreement helps level the playing field by allowing those businesses with no presence in West Virginia to voluntarily collect the West Virginia tax on sales made here, the release said.

Virgil T. Helton, cabinet secretary of the West Virginia Department of Revenue, said that in today's fast-paced world, collection of consumer sales tax is a challenge for business owners. By simplifying sales tax collection, member states are easing the burden on everyone, he said in the press release.
