Authority to discuss corridor proposal
CHARLESTON -- The West Virginia Public Port Authority will discuss an environmental impact study today regarding a planned intermodal facility in Prichard.
But the study is still about six months from completion, so the results are not available, the director of the port authority said.
Prichard has been chosen as one of three sites for an intermodal facility along the Heartland Corridor, a railway with tunnels high enough to carry double-stacked trains.
The Heartland Corridor project involves improvements in railways between the Virginia coast and Columbus, Ohio, so that trains can carry more goods. The public-private partnership will include construction of three intermodal facilities for easier transfer of containers between rail, roadways, rivers and airways. Along with Prichard, two others are planned for Roanoke, Va., and Columbus.
In Prichard, the port authority has land between the Big Sandy River and the railroad tracks for the construction of the facility. But it hasn't yet determined if the land already in hand will be sufficient. The environmental impact study to determine that is about six or eight months from completion, said Port Authority Director Patrick Donovan.
The Port Authority's next meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. today, Aug. 6, in Charleston. It will be in Room 122 of Building 5, the Department of Transportation, in the Capitol Complex.
