AEP River Operations reaches one million safe worked hours
LAKIN, W.Va.-- AEP River Operations recently marked 1 million hours without a lost-time accident with a celebration July 9.
The Lakin location is one of three divisions of River Operations, delivering coal to Power Plants on the Ohio, Mississippi and Kanawha rivers, according to a news release. It operates 14 tow boats and reached 1 million man-hour mark over a 10-month period on May 4.
"AEP has always had a culture of safety, but our chairman, Mike Morris, has really raised the bar for everybody at AEP," said Chuck Zebula, senior vice president for fuel, emissions and logistics. "That bar is high and the target is zero, and you've reached that target."

Bayer to expand production at W.Va. plant
INSTITUTE -- Bayer Crop Science is increasing production capacity at its Institute plant to meet a growing demand for its Larvin insecticide.
Site leader Nick Crosby says the company plants to hire 24 workers and invest about $3.5 million in one of the plant's two units that make Larvin.
Crosby says Larvin has found a new market niche since the company reformulated it and began marketing it as a seed-treatment product.
Bayer historically has operated one unit for six months, shut it down and then operated the other one. The company now plans to operate both units all year.
Crosby says the changes will boost overall capacity by about 40 percent.
