Local farmers honored for conservation efforts

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. -- Farmers in Putnam, Mason and Lincoln counties were honored recently for their conservation efforts during the Western Conservation District's 63rd Annual Awards Banquet at the West Virginia State Farm Museum near Point Pleasant.

"Dig It! the Secrets of Soil" was the 2009 National Association of Conservation Districts Stewardship theme. It was also the banquet theme, according to a press release.

The 2009 Conservation Farmers were Millstone Road farm of Marlin and Phyllis Price of Apple Grove, which won the award for Mason County and the overall district award; Alvin Stone, Glenn & Joetta Stone of OK Hill, Liberty, received the award for Putnam County; and John & Paula Knopp of Station Camp Road, Leroy, received the award for Lincoln County.

These farms worked closely with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in following their conservation farm plan, according to the release. The Western Conservation District supervisors, with the technical assistance of USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service staff, select the award- winning farms. Each winner received an aerial photo of their farm, an award plaque, a farm sign and cash.

Educational awards were also given at the banquet. Award-winners included Ravenswood FFA, which won the West Virginia Envirothon and West Virginia Homesite Contests; Roane-Jackson Vocational School received $100 for the FFA-CD Contest; youth photo contest winner Allen Conner and adult photo contest winner Jessica Grady each received $50; poster contest winner Amee Neal also received $50; Jeff L. Tomlin of Ripley High earned a WVACD scholarship.

Affiliate members were recognized for their support throughout the year. Those affiliates are: AEP Mountaineer Plant, AEP Philip Sporn Plant, Bob's Market & Greenhouses, Inc., City National Bank, Facemyer Resources, Fairplain Tractor Sales, Farm Credit of the Virginias ACA, G&G Builders, J. E. Stephens Farm Machinery, Ohio Valley Bank, Peoples Bank, Southern States Cooperative Point Pleasant, United National Bank and Yauger Farm Supply.

Supervisors of the Western Conservation District who were recognized include: Robert C. Baird, chairman; Oscar Harris, vice-chairman; Jacqueline Wright, treasurer; John Nibert, secretary; Michael Wolpert and Ellen Mills-Pauley.

Alvin Stone, Glenn and Joetta Stone of OK Hill farm in Liberty, W.Va., were named the Putnam County 2009 Conservation Farmers at the Western Conservation DistrictÕs 63rd Annual Awards Banquet.
