Lipson joins medical staff at St. Mary's
Wayne E. Lipson, MD, has joined the staff of St. Mary's Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgeons.
Lipson is board certified by The American Board of Surgery and The American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He received his medical degree from State University of New York at Stony Brook School of Medicine in Stony Brook, N.Y., and his master of science and bachelor of science degrees from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass.
He completed a residency in general surgery and a fellowship in thoracic surgery at Brigham & Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass., and an internship at State University of New York at Stony Brook. He also received additional training in adult cardiac surgery at VA Boston Health Care System in West Roxbury, Mass.
Before joining St. Mary's Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery, Lipson worked in a private practice for seven years in Miami, Fla. His professional experience includes appointment as a clinical assistant instructor in surgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass.

Bellefonte hires Kimball for planning, service line
RUSSELL, Ky. -- Brent Kimball has accepted the role of director of Planning and Service Line Development at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.
A Southern Ohio native, Brent brings more than 20 years experience in health care to the job, including roles in support services, clinical areas and management/administration. In his new position, Kimball will lead the planning initiatives of the hospital, as well as grow and develop hospital service lines.
Kimball earned both an undergraduate and a master's degree in health care administration from Marshall University in Huntington. He earned a nursing degree from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Gulfport, Miss.
Prior to coming to Bellefonte, Kimball most recently served as an administrator in the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine Department of Neuroscience, overseeing operational and financial performance at University Physicians & Surgeons. He also is a former director of Planning at Cabell Huntington Hospital.
Kimball resides in Barboursville with his wife and children.
Swartzwelder becomes certified nurse educator
CHESAPEAKE, Ohio -- Kay Swartzwelder, MSN, RN, of the Collins Career Center School of Nursing has earned the designation of Certified Nurse Educator after meeting eligibility criteria and passing an exam administered by the National League for Nursing.
She is a lifelong resident of Lawrence County, Ohio, and has worked at the Collins Career Center 12 years, serving as Surgical Technology instructor, associate director of Nursing and Allied Health, and now as Director of Nursing. She is now working toward a PhD at Capella University.
Mitchell named RCBI's Employee of the Month
HUNTINGTON -- C.T. Mitchell of Huntington has been selected as Employee of the Month for October at the Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing, RCBI Director and CEO Charlotte Weber announced.
Mitchell has served in a part-time capacity as senior public information specialist since February 2007, working out of the Huntington Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center.
A native of Williamson, W.Va., he is a 1949 graduate of Williamson High School and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism from Marshall University. After a 19-year career in various editing positions at newspapers in Williamson and Huntington, he joined the Marshall University staff, serving as director of university relations and presidential assistant. After closing his 27-year Marshall career in 2000, he assisted Marshall President Emeritus Robert B. Hayes in writing the history of the Marshall medical school.
Mitchell was a founding board member of both Prestera Center for Mental Health and Green Acres Regional Center for the Developmentally Disabled, serving on the latter board for more than 40 years. He was among the initial group to be inducted into the Williamson High School Hall of Fame in 2000 and received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism in 1989. He was a member of the U.S. Army of Occupation in West Germany from 1954 to 1956, serving at the army's European headquarters. A widower, he is the father of Richard Mitchell and Matthew Garrett of Huntington and Sharon Norris of Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
"There's no substitute for experience and C.T. has brought a world of helpful experience to RCBI," Weber said in a press release. "As a veteran newspaperman, his firsthand knowledge of how the media work has been invaluable to us. In his nearly 30-year career at Marshall, he showed time and time again that he knew how to tell the university's story to the media and the public. Now, we're fortunate that he's putting those same skills to work for RCBI."
RCBI provides access to technology and technical training to manufacturers across the region.
Hosey named VA's Employee of the Year
Eddie Hosey of Chesapeake, Ohio, has been named as the 2009 Employee of the Year at the Huntington VA Medical Center. Medical Center Director Edward H. Seiler announced the award during the facility's annual Employee Recognition Cookout Oct. 8.
Hosey, a radiology technologist, began his VA career in August 1986 in Imaging Service. He is a graduate of St. Mary's School of Radiology and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Hosey was recognized for his superior work ethic and willingness to go above and beyond in caring for Veterans and assisting his co-workers.
Ballou named MU Employee of the Month
HUNTINGTON --Scott Ballou has been named the Marshall University Employee of the Month for September. Scott is a campus police officer and a graduate and former student athlete of Marshall University.
In her nomination, Sgt. Angela Howell said, "Campus wide safety has always been a top priority for Scott. He has often gone above what he is required as part of his job to address audiences on and off campus about safety and law enforcement issues." He is a huge advocate for women's safety...This interest lead Scott to become a certified Rape Aggression Defense instructor. He has taught 1,000 plus Marshall students and women from the community on violence prevention and how to protect themselves.
"He truly demonstrates hard work and enthusiasm in everything he does. He gives 110% to all duties assigned. Scott continues to want to better himself so he can better serve the university community."
Scott was presented with a plaque, MU Bookstore discount card, a Sodexho gift certificate and a check for $100 by Layton Cottrill, Chief of Staff.
