Ashley Furniture opens at former Goody's location

August 28, 2010 @ 12:00 AM

BARBOURSVILLE -- Bob Young has been wanting to tap into the Tri-State market for a long time.

The Teays Valley father of two already owns an Ashley Furniture HomeStore in Charleston, along Corridor G, and in Johnson City, Tenn., near where he grew up. He knew the Tri-State market was big enough and perfect for another store, but it wasn't until the right bit of real estate became available that the vision became reality.

And this week, his new 30,000-square-foot store opened in the former Goody's location, which is at 5 Mall Drive in the plaza with Hobby Lobby and Drug Emporium.

The store sells many styles of home furnishes as well as accessories such as wall hangings, lamps and area rugs. "We also have a phenomenal mattress department," Young said. It features all the major name brands in mattresses.

The HomeStore had a soft opening Wednesday and officially opened on Friday. There was a good bit of interest even before the store was officially opened, Young said Friday morning.

One reason Ashley furniture is popular nationwide is because of the quality a customer gets for the price, Young said. The store also provides a larger range of services that some stores selling discount furniture don't, he said, such as delivery and in-home tech service.

That being said, many customers just get inspired when they walk in the store, Young said, crediting his director of design, Jamie McCormick, for the inspirations he's created in the Barboursville, Charleston and Tennessee stores. McCormick has a degree in design from West Virginia University and does a tremendous job, he said.

"The showroom is so beautiful and inspiring that they may not need anything, but they find something they want," he said."

The store has 20 full-time employees and cost about a $500,000 in construction to transform the former department store into an expansive showroom multiple raised walls, special lighting and a variety of different flooring. Local contractors were hired for the job, he said.

To celebrate the grand opening of West Virginia's newest location, each store will give away a grand prize $5,000 furniture shopping spree. There will be 15 other winners to receive sofas, mattresses and recliners. The Grand Opening Giveaway will be held at both locations at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, and you must be present to win.

Hours for the store are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 12:30 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Ashley Furniture HomeStores only sell furniture from Ashley Furniture Industries Inc. Established in 1945, its lines now include bedroom, dining room, upholstery, motion upholstery, leather, occasional tables, entertainment centers, home office, youth bedroom, recliners, lamps, accent pillows, throws, area rugs and accessories.

The first Ashley Furniture HomeStore opened in Anchorage, Alaska in 1997, and there are currently 393 HomeStores in North America.
