Appliance tax holiday begins Sept. 1

August 31, 2010 @ 12:00 AM

West Virginia's ENERGY STAR Sales Tax Holiday runs Wednesday, Sept. 1, through Tuesday, Nov. 30.

During the 90-day period, customers may purchase all ENERGY STAR products with a retail price of $5,000 or less without the 6 percent state sales and use taxes. All West Virginia businesses that sell ENERGY STAR products must participate in the Sales Tax Holiday.

"These products can significantly reduce energy and water consumption and decrease utility bills throughout the year for the homeowner," Michael Chenard, director of environmental affairs for Lowe's, said in a press release.

The appliances include clothes washers, dishwashers, refrigerators and freezers, dehumidifiers, programmable thermostats, ceiling fans, air conditioners and CFL light bulbs.

According to the release from Lowe's, replacing a refrigerator manufactured prior to 1993 with a more energy efficient refrigerator can save more than $55 a year on an energy bill. Upgrading a clothes washer can cut utility bills by an average of $50 a year.

This is the third and final year for the tax holiday.
