El Haijj celebrates 13 years with specials

December 06, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- El Haijj Salon & Spa is celebrating its 13th anniversary Friday and Saturday, Dec. 11-12, with an open house and some special activities to kick off the gift-giving season.

Other local businesses are joining in the party, too.

The salon, founded by owner Susan Hage, is celebrating the "13 days of Christmas," giving away gift certificates, hosting a holiday raffle and providing sample pampering and coupons to guests to show appreciation of local patronage.

El Haijj also offers an "Elf Project," where local businesses can call on the salon to visit and pamper eight to 10 employees.

For its anniversary celebration, Santa, Mrs. Claus and the elves will visit the salon, and there will be a book-signing by two local authors. Paige Crews, author of "Down the Ohio River in 80 Days: A Commemoration of the Lewis and Clark Expedition," will be there. Also, Dr. Barbara Becker-Cotrill and Dr. Jennifer McFarland Whisman, authors of "Autism: A Primer for Educators," will be on hand. A live radio remote will be part of the event as well.

The spa's mission is not only to provide a nurturing, rejuvenating atmosphere for its clients, but to give back to the community, said Hage, who named the spa in honor of her Lebanese heritage. "El Haijj" is "Hage" in Arabic, meaning "the pilgrimage," she said in a release.

Other businesses in that neighborhood have activities as well on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 11-12. Here's a rundown:

Mountain State Oral & Maxiofacial Surgeons will perform consultations at El Haijj Spa those days and will have gifts and samples and information about their business and procedures they perform.

Bella Consignment owner Joanie Ward Smith will have an open house as well, serving refreshments. It's located at 1104 20th St. Those who bring a coat will receive a discount off their entire purchase. The coats will be donated to the Ebenezer Community Outreach program.

Wash 'n' Vac owner Dutchess McComas is collecting blankets, hoodies, coats and gloves for homeless veterans. Her business is located at 1202 20th St. She will be cooking chili.

Bookworms Attic owner Sara Loftus will be having an open house with refreshments. Her book store is at 354 Norway Ave. She will donate 10 percent of sales to support the Our Lady of Fatima Band & Choir Program.
