HUNTINGTON -- Like many business owners, Brian Varney started out with just having a hobby he liked. He did videography for friends and family and gradually began to do photography.
When his work began to be in demand, photography became more than a hobby.
"I really enjoyed it," Varney said. "I decided to pursue it as a business."
Zephany Photography does photography from children to adults, with a wide variety of props and settings. The company also does photography for modeling, glamour photography and bridal portraits.
Getting a studio open has been a large undertaking, Varney said. The location had to have a lot of renovations done. But they are getting the finishing touches done, and the rest of the props are arriving, he added.
Varney has two assistants, Cecilia Pauley and Kayla Meade, who help with office work and setting up props.
Pauley is not new to the photography business and has several tricks she has found for making children's photos.
"The secret for kids is bubbles," Pauley said.
Varney aims to keep his client base loyal, and so far his work has been well accepted. Meade, Varney's other assistant, came to work for him after really enjoying work he had done for her school.
Part of keeping people coming back when they need new photos taken is always offering new things, Varney said. They get new props in with each season, so there is always something new for clients.
"It gives repeat customers something to look forward to," he said.
Zephany offers a Web site where customers can order their pictures once they have been taken. They can make selections in the privacy of their home with no pressure to buy, and they can do it when they have the time, Pauley said.
"And they don't have to keep coming back in when they want more photos," Meade added.
Zephany Photography is located at 1402 4th Ave. Hours of operation are noon to 8 p.m.. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. For more information, contact (304) 525-2288 or visit the Web site at www.zephany.com.
