Unemployment drops in most area counties
HUNTINGTON -- Unemployment rates for October were down in most West Virginia counties, including Cabell, Wayne, Mason and Putnam.
Figures released Friday by Workforce West Virginia show unemployment declined in 44 counties in October.
In Cabell, the rate for October was 6.3 percent, down from 6.5 percent in September and a high of about 8 percent in June. However, all those rates are significantly higher than the 3.4 percent rate posted for the county in October 2008.
Wayne County had a rate of 7.4 percent, down from 7.7 in September; Mason 11 percent down from 12; and Putnam 5.7 percent down from 6.3.
Ten counties reported higher jobless rates. The rates in three counties were unchanged from September.
Monongalia County had the lowest unemployment rate, 4.7 percent. Clay County's 14.6 percent rate was the highest in the state.
Statewide, West Virginia's unemployment rate fell by three-tenths of a percentage point to 7.7 percent in October.
