W.Va. jobless rate up slightly in August

CHARLESTON -- West Virginia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased slightly in August to 6.3 percent.

WorkForce West Virginia said Tuesday the number of unemployed residents rose by 700 to 49,600 last month.

West Virginia's unemployment rate in July was 6.2 percent. The August rate is a full percentage point below the U.S. average.

Through August, total state unemployment is down 11,600.

While manufacturing jobs were down in August employment increased in mining and logging. Construction jobs were up.

WVU's annual economic outlook conference Oct. 1

CHARLESTON -- Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond economist Andy Bauer will be a guest speaker at the West Virginia University Bureau for Business and Economic Research's 2014 West Virginia Economic Outlook Conference, being held Oct. 1 at the Embassy Suites in Charleston.

The annual event is designed to give state business and political leaders expert insight and information on national and state economic trends over the coming year.

Bauer will provide an overview of the national economic forecast for 2014, while WVU Bureau of Business and Economic Research director John Deskins will present the school's state-level economic forecast.

The school is also planning to host a panel with state business and industry leaders to discuss implications of the forecast.

W.Va. mine rescue team captures national title

CHARLESTON -- The Mine Rescue Team from Cliffs Natural Resources' Pinnacle Mine in Wyoming County won first place at the 2013 National Coal Mine Rescue Competition, the company announced Friday.

Sponsored by the National Mining Association and administered by the U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration, the four-day competition featured more than 80 rescue teams from 12 states.

Competition events ranged from first aid to the more complex simulated mine rescue scenarios.

The Pinnacle Mine Blue Team completed both days of team events without a single error and achieved the fastest problem solving time on the second day of competition. It was the second time the team won the national title, the first one coming in 2005.
