WINFIELD, W.Va. -- The Putnam County Chamber of Commerce held a membership drive Thursday to encourage added commitment and support to the county's business networking organization.
With nearly 500 members currently, the Chamber obtained commitment from 50 additional business owners as a result of the day's event, with 10 to 15 others expected to join within the week.
Chamber members volunteered throughout the day to contact local businesses explaining the advantages and benefits of becoming a Chamber member. Their efforts were rewarded with a chance to win a variety of door prizes including televisions and MP3 players donated by area companies.
Terry Mathias, independent insurance agent and chairperson of the membership committee said, "We're making a concentrated effort to grow our membership to benefit the business community."
Chamber President Marty Chapman said, "These drives are vital to our existence. We lose about 10 percent of our members each year so it's important to replace those numbers. We appreciate their support of the organization and the future growth of the organization."
