W.Va. unemployment rises to 5.8 percent
CHARLESTON -- About 4,500 West Virginians joined the unemployment rolls in February as the state's jobless rate rose one-half of a percentage point to 5.8 percent.
Workforce West Virginia attributes much of the increase to declines in the goods-producing and service-providing sectors.
A total of 46,600 West Virginians were unemployed last month.
The goods-producing sector lost 800 jobs in construction, 200 in manufacturing and 200 in natural resources and mining. Losses in the service-providing sector included 1,100 jobs in trade, transportation and utilities.
West Virginia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate climbed two-tenths of a percentage point to 4.6 percent in February. The national rate dipped one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.8 percent.
