Tri-State in Training: Biz Assist Council meets March 25

BIZ ASSIST COUNCIL: Unlimited Future invites small business owners to bring a lunch and ideas to a meeting of the BizAssist Council, from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, at Unlimited Future Inc., 1650 8th Ave. in Huntington.

The council intends to help developing businesses grow, giving members a chance to share ideas, voice concerns and learn ways to improve the local business climate. This month Roberta Weaver, CPA of Bagby & Weaver, will discuss tax planning for small businesses. Jason Hager, co-owner of The Referral Institute of West Virginia, will facilitate the meeting.

SCHOOL FOR WOMEN: Applications for the New Opportunity School for Women are now available. It's a free educational and career-exploration program, geared toward women age 33 to 55 in a period of transition or wanting to clarify their personal strengths and aspirations. It's for women with a high school diploma or GED, but not a college degree. Classes cover self esteem, computer basics, leadership development, self defense, Appalachian literature, public speaking, how to enroll in further education and other topics. The program is scheduled from June 1-21 on the Berea College Campus in Berea, Ky.

Application deadline is Tuesday, April 1. Those selected to attend will have internships in their fields of interest, either on the campus or in the community. Lodging and meals are provided, and grants for travel and child care are available. RETIREMENT WORKSHOPS: Malcom Wain of Wain Financial group will conduct three retirement planning workshops at Austyn's Restaurant located in Ironton.

The first will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3. The second is set for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 8. The third will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 10.

Wain has 20 years of experience in the financial services industry and specializes in helping people with their IRA, 401(k) and 403b, showing them how to take advantage of changes in the laws to protect and preserve their hard-earned savings and to pass on that savings to their heirs in the most tax-efficient manner. He shows retirees how to lock in their gains while preventing losses. A complimentary meal is included.

MATURE WORKER PROGRAM: Seniors who'd like to re-enter the work force, but aren't sure where to look, can start with Southwestern Community Action Council. The council's Mature Worker Program provides employment and training opportunities to residents of Cabell, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, Mingo and Wayne counties in West Virginia, and Boyd, Carter, Greenup, and Lewis counties in Kentucky.

Participants must be 55 or older and meet income eligibility guidelines. The Southwestern staff places mature workers in a part-time community service training assignment to gain experience and then assists them in re-entering the work force.
