Hubbard takes landslide victory
HUNTINGTON -- Susan Hubbard advanced to November's general election in landslide fashion Tuesday night, according to unofficial results from Tuesday's primary.
The former legislator and past president of the Cabell County Democratic Women's Club defeated Damon Holley in the Democratic race for Cabell County Commission.
Hubbard received 10,389 votes to Holley's 3,387. That equaled an estimated 51-percentage point difference when the unofficial tally was announced.
Hubbard supports more sheriff's deputies, pay raises for courthouse employees, infrastructure improvements and attracting more business to Cabell County. She looks forward to six more months of campaigning.
"I'm very happy, very pleased," she said. "I've run so many other times and in elections you never know what to expect, but I am pleased."
Hubbard will face incumbent County Commissioner Nancy Cartmill in November. Cartmill is vying for her second term in office. The former mayor of Barboursville was unopposed in Tuesday's Republican primary. She received 4,807 votes out of 6,156 Republican ballots cast.
Cartmill has said increasing courthouse salaries and the number of sheriff's deputies are among her priorities. She hopes more deputies would decrease drug activity. She also supports tax incentives to bring more jobs and a continued focus on increasing water service to rural areas of the county.
"I will campaign the way I always have," Cartmill said. "I never take anything for granted. I don't have any idea what is going to happen in the fall. I think you have to run every race as if you're going to lose."
Holley was unavailable for comment Tuesday evening.
Hubbard commended Holley on running a friendly campaign.
