Poore to seek seat in House

Jul. 11, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

CHARLESTON -- Delegate Meshea Poore, D-Kanawha, announced Wednesday that she is running for the U.S. House in West Virginia's 2nd Congressional District.

"West Virginians need a member of Congress who will take some new energy to Washington and who has a track record of getting things done," Poore said in a release. "I am the candidate who has both of those qualities. I have been in the trenches working on issues that West Virginia families care about, like education, jobs and standing up for teachers and workers."

Poore serves as chair of the House of Delegates Legislative Rule-Making Review Committee and the House Judiciary Subcommittee B. She serves as a committee member on Energy, Industry and Labor/Economic Development and Small Business; Judiciary; and Health and Constitutional Revision. She is also part of both the labor and coal caucus.

Poore, who is an attorney, was appointed to the House and won re-election in 2012. She is a Charleston native who grew up on the city's West Side.

Republican Rep. Shelley Moore Capito currently represents the 2nd Congressional District. She has announced a run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va.

The 2nd District includes Putnam, Mason and Kanawha counties and stretches east across the middle of the state to include 15 more counties.
