Delegates see energy at RNC

September 04, 2008 @ 12:00 AM

Cabell County's representatives at the Republican National Convention have been energized by what they've seen so far in St. Paul, Minn.

They only expect the energy to keep building, two of the delegates said Wednesday as they looked forward to vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and former primary opponents of Sen. John McCain taking the stage Wednesday night.

Real time updates, more stories and multimedia from the Republican National Convention.

Delegate Carol Miller represents District 15, which encompasses Cabell County, in the West Virginia House of Delegates and is serving as an at-large delegate at the national convention. Miller described her first convention as "a very exciting experience."

"There's an energy at the convention, and it's exciting seeing that energy in the people," Miller said. "It's great to be involved in the American process during such a historic election."

David Tyson, who represents the state's 3rd Congressional District at the convention, said the highlight of Tuesday night's events was Sen. Joseph Lieberman's speech rallying behind McCain for president.

"He brought the delegates to their feet when he spoke about working with McCain and how he's been able to work in a bipartisan manner," Tyson said.

Tyson said he was looking forward to the last speaker on Wednesday night's agenda, vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, the Alaska governor who has been in the spotlight since an ethics investigation and the pregnancy of her 17-year-old daughter were revealed.

Tyson said Palin's speech Wednesday night was an important one.

"It's the time and the opportunity to define herself," he said.

Tyson, who has attended eight Republican National Conventions, also looked forward to the speeches Wednesday night from former primary opponents of McCain. They included former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

Because of the West Virginia delegation's placement on the convention floor, its members have been able to see several prominent Republicans, such as former House speaker Newt Gingrich and first lady Laura Bush.

Miller said the delegation has been participating in seminars and events that aim to inform the delegates about how to localize important GOP principles. Seminars on energy and education were among those she had attended as of Wednesday.

Mike and Nora Ankrom, Kevin Noe and Matt Pinson join Miller and Tyson as Cabell County's at-large delegates in the West Virginia delegation at the convention. Thirty people are representing the state at the convention.
