Davis wins third term in House from Ky.

November 05, 2008 @ 01:25 AM

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Republican U.S. Rep. Geoff Davis easily won over Democrat Michael Kelley, an Oldham County physican, in northern Kentucky's 4th District in Tuesday's general election.

The victory gives Davis his third term in Congress. Boyd County is included in the 4th District.

In another Kentucky congressional matchup, Democratic Rep. John Yarmuth easily defeated former Republican Rep. Anne Northup on Tuesday in a rematch of their 2006 race in Louisville's 3rd District.

Republican Brett Guthrie retained Kentucky's 2nd District for the GOP on Tuesday by edging David Boswell, who made a strong push to become the first Democrat to win the seat in 16 years.

Guthrie will replace U.S. Rep. Ron Lewis, who won a special election in 1994 and then served seven consecutive terms before announcing his retirement this year. Lewis' special election win foreshadowed the GOP onslaught that would occur that year when an unhappy electorate booted incumbent Democrats around the country.

After defeating his colleague from the state Senate, Guthrie is headed to a Congress expected to once again be under the control of Democrats.

Other incumbents coasted to re-election around the state.

Republican U.S. Reps. Hal Rogers defeated independent Jim Holbert in the 5th District to win a 15th term in eastern Kentucky; and Ed Whitfield easily defeated Heather Ryan in western Kentucky's 1st District.

Democrat Ben Chandler defeated Lexington attorney Jon Larson in the 6th District, which includes Lexington and surrounding areas.
