Voters to decide on changes to charter

HUNTINGTON — In addition to voting for mayoral and City Council candidates in November, residents in Huntington also will get to weigh in on three proposed City Charter amendments.

The proposed amendments are the product of Huntington City Council's five-member Charter Review Committee, which spent several months reviewing the city's 27-year-old governing document and interviewing members of the committee that wrote it in 1985 when the city switched to the strong mayor form of government now being used.

In addition to asking voters whether Huntington should discard or retain its residency requirement for city employees, the proposed amendments also include eliminating the requirement that the public works director have a certified engineering license and abolishing the requirement that the city maintain a central garage.
