Tropical Moon opens South Point location

Apr. 04, 2013 @ 09:07 AM

SOUTH POINT, Ohio — There’s a full moon out in South Point. A Tropical Moon to be exact.

Edwin Lake opened his first frozen yogurt shop in downtown Huntington in 2011 followed by a second in Barboursville in 2012. The newest addition to the Tropical Moon family opened its doors on Friday, March 29, in the Tri-State Crossing shopping plaza in South Point.

“We had been looking into opening a location in Ohio for some time,” Lake said. “There had been a restaurant called China Town in this location before that closed. When we saw this space we really liked it. When we started to move in kitchen equipment from the Chinese restaurant was still there. We gutted it out to the outside walls and the back walls. There was nothing left of the restaurant when we started building. We came in and put in all new floors and walls to accommodate what we needed. We put in new freezers and sinks in the kitchen and new fixtures in the bathroom. This space is larger than our other stores, so we‘ll be able to do birthday parties and other private gatherings.”

Like the Huntington and Barboursville locations, Tropical Moon is a self-serve frozen yogurt store offering a mix of flavors ranging from chocolate to cake batter to mountain blackberry. While some favorites stay around, a range of flavors rotate every two weeks. Customers can also get yogurt pies.

“We have 80 plus flavors available to us,” Lake said. “Other than the core flavors of chocolate, vanilla, cake batter, etc., we rotate every flavor. We’re bringing in cookies & cream, angel food cake, a dairy-free pink lemonade sorbet, Georgia peach and a no sugar added strawberry throughout the coming weeks. We try to do an equal part of the fruit flavors and the sweet flavors. We also have a wide selection of fruits, candy, sprinkles and other toppings. All of our fruit is fresh cut daily. It‘s funny, we post all of our flavors on Facebook and there are a lot of people who let us know what they want. We try to accommodate what people are looking for. You can also put together your own combinations. Put together some vanilla yogurt, some cinnamon toast crunch, chocolate chips, almonds, chocolate syrup and a little caramel and you have a Mexican taco.”

The South Point location will have a grand opening Friday, April 5. Customers can get two free ounces of yogurt with their purchase throughout the day. There will be guests from the radio station Hits 97.9-FM from 4 to 6 p.m. T-shirts and gift cards will also be given away.

To help keep up with the three locations, Lake has even created a car called “The Moonmobile” which delivers fruit and other supplies between stores while serving as a moving billboard. The Moonmobile was purchased at Brothers Auto Sales in Huntington with a custom logos by Paris Signs. It even has a surfboard which was brought in from California.
