Barnyard BBQ brings the sauce to Teays Valley

TEAYS VALLEY -- Three years ago, Crystal Tincher purchased a smoker/trailer from the owners of Aunt B's Bakery in Hurricane.

Tincher initially intended to use the smoker as part of a fundraiser for child care, but it has turned into a full-time business for her. In fall of 2010, Tincher opened her own restaurant called "Barnyard BBQ" on Hospital Drive. Since then the business has expanded gradually to include a full service bar and live music. The bar area also features a number of flat screen televisions for game days.

"There was really nothing planned," she said. "We've remodeled one room at a time. We are in the process of putting in an outdoor patio. We're hoping to have some tables outside in a couple of weeks. Eventually it is going to be enclosed for indoor/outdoor dining. The barbecue just kept growing, growing and growing. It's grown into 200 seats. I didn't even have any barbecue experience prior to having the smoker. It's just having the right people come in over the years."

Tincher said the food helps.

"All of our barbecue sauces are homemade," she said. "Our house sauce is more of a tomato and garlic based sauce. We do make other sauces like the Carolina vinegar and mustard barbecue. We also have a spicy barbecue sauce. We call it West Virginia style. Our ribs are fall-off the bone. We have barbecue pulled pork, chicken and brisket. We also have a smoked prime rib."

In addition to barbecue, the restaurant has a variety of other entrees including hamburgers, Cajun-style catfish, spaghetti and country fried chicken livers. There is also a combo platter called "Two can dine for $19.99," featuring pulled pork, chicken, brisket, ribs and three homemade sides.

The bar features a number of domestic beers on tap including Goose Island, Magic Hat and Yuengling. There are also a selection of craft and import beers in bottles, and there is a daily margarita special. There are also 2-for-1 draft beer specials on Monday evenings.

"We have chocolate meringue and lemon meringue pie made from scratch," Tincher said. "We also have peach cobbler and homemade bread pudding. We're also really well known for our "Cow Patty." It's a rich chocolate or red velvet cake dipped in funnel cake mix and deep fried served with ice cream."

Barnyard Barbecue features live music from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Barnyard BBQ is located at 1101 Hospital Drive in Teays Valley. It is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays and Mondays, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. from Tuesday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
