Toro Loco brings its Mexican fare to Ashland

Apr. 18, 2013 @ 07:19 AM

ASHLAND — Recently a new location of Toro Loco opened along 13th Street in Ashland.

Toro Loco is a regional family of restaurants in the Ohio and Kentucky region with five other locations. It was founded by Jose Garcia a restaurateur who also owns the Ashland-based Italian restaurant Bella Fonte.

“About one year ago in April we tried a new restaurant concept in this location called The Grille, which served a mix of Spanish and Peruvian cuisine,” said Theresa Newsome, office manager for Toro Loco. “The new restaurant idea wasn’t as popular as we wanted it to be, so we decided to turn this into another Toro Loco location. Enough people were asking us why we didn’t put a Toro Loco in Ashland, so it just made sense for the change.”

The restaurant didn’t close during the transition, but there were some changes.

“We did some painting and a little of refurbishing here and there but there wasn’t a lot of work in the transition,” Newsome said. “We worked for about two months on the transition, getting the new menus just right.  Because some of our chefs had worked in other Toro Loco locations they already knew the menu.”

The new Toro Loco location will carry over some Peruvian items from the old menu including “Tallarin Saltado” a  stir-fried spaghetti pasta served with beef ($11) or seafood ($13). There are also some variations of “Ceviche” a Peruvian-style tossed fish salad made with fresh, uncooked fish that has been marinated. Customers can also try “Cicha” a Peruvian style of cider made with maize.

The  Mexican menu includes traditional favorites like tacos, burritos, enchilladas and chiles rellenos (stuffed peppers). These include the Burrito Grande ($10.99) filled with ground beef, chicken, steak tips, rice and beans. There are also a wide selection of combination dinners like the Grande Special ($10.50) featuring a chalupa, chili relleno, enchilda, taco, burrito, rice and beans.

The restaurant also features a lunch buffet from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Sunday ($7.50). The buffet features several Mexican dishes, a Peruvian dish, a salad bar and dessert. The Ashland location also features a banquette room that can be booked for private parties and sometimes hosts live music. This location serves a variety of beers but no liquors.

“We use the freshest ingredients, and we stay true to authentic Mexican cuisine,” Newsome said. “We have a lot of dishes that are really good. I think the thing the most people ask us about is the queso, which is made from a Oaxaca cheese and we use in a variety of dishes. We have what I think is the most fabulous salsa you will ever have.  We also have a really hot salsa that we keep under lock and key in the kitchen for the really adventurous types. We pride ourselves on great customer service. We want our customers to come in, kick their shoes off and enjoy themselves.”

Toro Loco is located at 915 13th St., in Ashland. It is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
