New management, menu at Blackhawk Grille

Sep. 26, 2012 @ 08:21 PM

BARBOURSVILLE -- Established in 2001, the Blackhawk Grille has a reputation as a place for fine dining.

What you might not know is that in addition to the food, Blackhawk Grille is home to a wealth of history. The location was home to a number of different restaurants including Gatsby's, and the restaurant features wood and stained glass from a Pullman railroad car used by elite financier J.P. Morgan.

Since the restaurant came under new ownership earlier this year, the new management (Executive Chef Paul Runnels, Chef Matthew Bostic, and Executive Assistant Barbie Wood) has dedicated itself to having great service and great food. Executive Chef/Owner Runnels is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America with 35 years of experience in the restaurant business.

"Chef Paul asked me to help redevelop the Blackhawk Grille," Wood said. "We set out to make improvements to the service, significant improvements to the food quality, and we improved the kitchen staff. We change our menu quite often so we can have the freshest menu in town. There will be seasonal selections. The beauty of being in a fine dining establishment is that you have the ability to tailor your menu to your client base."

While a new fall menu is being prepared to be rolled out in a few weeks, customers can enjoy a variety of dishes including steaks, seafood and chicken. The current menu includes a 14-ounce New York Strip with garlic herb butter, mashed potatoes and asparagus. For seafood lovers, there's a cajun-seared salmon with pesto pasta, black bean Creole sauce and haricot vert (green beans).

"You can't just have great food. You can't just have a great environment," Wood said. "You want to make the customer your guest. We've tried to re-create that first-class dining environment offering a cost effective and efficient menu that's accessible to the consumer. We've cut the menu costs by about 30% from when we first came in. We also trained our staff until they are stellar. Not just good, but stellar."

Blackhawk Grille also has a full service bar featuring a wide selection of fine wines and craft beers as well as a number of specialty cocktails.
