The calzone takes center stage at D.P. Dough

Jul. 07, 2013 @ 05:13 PM

HUNTINGTON — Established near the University of Massachusetts in 1987, D.P. Dough is a chain of take-out stores specializing in calzones.

Today the chain is based out of Columbus, Ohio, and features 27 locations in nine states. D.P. Dough came to Huntington in 2007 with a location on 6th Avenue before moving to 4th Avenue in 2010.

“We came to Huntington just over six years ago, and we moved here over three years ago now,” said Jason Nerenberg, general manager of the Huntington store.

“We felt the move would be the best for us to be in walking distance of (Marshall University’s) campus. When this space became available to us we wanted to seize it as soon as we had the opportunity.  This location offers us much more visibility, and allows us to better serve our customers. Over the past few months we have been remodeling the inside of our store. We have put up some chalkboard walls that are very popular with our customers. We have also added a new ceiling, some new decor and new bathrooms. We are constantly updating and making things better for our customers.”

In addition to the physical updates, the menu has had some changes as well.

“We have just redesigned the menu,” Nerenberg said. “A lot of the D.P. Dough locations are introducing ‘Local Zones.’ For instance the ‘BZone’ which is one of our ‘Huntington Zones’ is a calzone that we came up with here, that is now at all of our locations. We also have Construction  Zone where customers can choose five ingredients and customize their own calzones. We also added tots. Tater tots are really popular these days so we thought we would get in on the fun.”

All calzones sell for $7.25. Huntington Zones include the BZone with chicken, steak, bacon, barbecue sauce, plus cheddar cheese and the School Zone with steak, mushrooms and mozzarella.

Other calzones include the Roni Zoni filled with pepperoni, mozzarella, parmesan and ricotta and the Buffer Zone filled with breaded chicken, mozzarella, hot sauce and blue cheese. For 50 cents more customers can “hook up” a calzone with an extra seasoning like parmesan cheese or garlicky butter.

The restaurant also includes a wide variety of salads ranging from a Caesar Salad ($5.75.) to a Turkey Club Salad ($6.75). Customers can also get Buffalo wings starting at $5 for an order of six wings and cheese sticks. ($4.50). For dessert, customers can try a dessert calzone (such as the apple or cherry pie zones), sample some fresh baked cookies, or have a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream delivered to them.

The Huntington D.P. Dough location has also recently started charity work with the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and Huntington in Bloom, helping them organize fundraisers.
