River and Rail Bakery expands menu

HUNTINGTON — Since opening the River and Rail Bakery in March of 2011, owner Kim Baker is bringing in the dough. Literally.  

The small bakery/coffee shop has expanded its menu with different varieties of fresh baked bread being served every day. Customers might find multigrain, Moroccan olive bread or spent grain (grain that has been used in the process of beer making). Large loaves currently sell for $6 while small ones go for $3. In addition to its selection of French baguettes, cookies and croissants, the bakery is now expanding.

“We now have a refrigerated case so we are able to do more things,” Baker said. “Our intention is to expand into cheesecake, fruit tarts and tiramisu. We started making cookies for the local wine bar Sipp. One day we didn‘t have the cookies available so I told them I had a cheesecake they could have instead. It‘s now on their menu. It‘s a chocolate and caramel-topped cheesecake. The cheesecake isn’t an everyday item at the bakery yet.”

Baker is expanding the menu at the request of customers.

“Since there used to be a restaurant many people come in looking for a restaurant, so we decided to come up with something to satisfy those people,” she said. “We now have a fresh salad and soup of the day such as Fresh Market Vegetable Soup made with local ingredients and tabbouleh (a salad made with bulgur wheat, fresh mint, parsley, cucumber, tomato and lemon juice). The soup and salad of the day sell for $5 to $6 a piece. We get what vegetables we can from local sources like the Wild Ramp next door. We are also looking into eventually introducing panini sandwiches.”

The bakery is also taking part in a host of events at Heritage Station. On Saturday, Aug. 18, Heritage Station will be hosting “Bakery Jam Originals” from noon to 4 p.m. The event will feature local artists performing original works. The bakery will also be participating in the “Third Thursday” Huntington Art Walk on Aug. 16. Heritage station will host the third annual Diamond Teeth Mary Blues and Arts Festival on Aug. 24-25. The festival will be 5-10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25. Heritage station is also hosting an outdoor movie screening of “The Princess Bride” on Friday, Aug. 3, though this event will be after the bakery’s normal hours of operation.

In addition to the various breads and pastries, River & Rail offers a full coffee shop including lattes ($3 small, $4.15 for a large) and chai ($3.50 to $4.50). The most famous is perhaps the River & Rail Mocha, a white chocolate mocha with caramel drizzle and whipped cream.

The River & Rail bakery is open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.  Cash, check and major credit/debit cards are accepted. For more information, catering options and special orders, call 304-525-7333.
