Barboursville Giovanni's Pizza moves to new location

Feb. 23, 2012 @ 02:37 PM

For a regional chain with more than 100 locations in six states and 40 years of history, Giovanni's brand of pizzerias are nearly ubiquitous in the area.

When the neighboring Pizza Hut moved to a new location, the owners of the Barboursville Giovanni's purchased the building and renovated it.

"We acquired the building on Dec. 22, and we were able to reopen on Jan. 30. It took us just over a month to get the place ready. We had to completely restore the building. The roof had to come off, and we had to repaint the outside," said Jeremy Spears, a managing partner of the Barboursville Giovanni's. "We also redid all of the flooring and installed a bar inside. We also had to install new equipment in the kitchen. With the larger space, we've hired about six new employees."

In addition to the location, the menu also is expanding.

"We are now going to serve cheeseburgers as well as some new appetizers like deep fried pickles, jalapeño poppers and cheese sticks," Spears said. "As soon as we get our liquor license, we are also going to have a pub with beer, wine and a few mixed drinks. As this new location is new, we are trying to get everything situated before we add too many new items or specials to the menu."

Spears said there are differences among the local Giovanni's.

"You can go to just about any Giovanni's, and there's a subtle difference between the pizzas," he said. "I think we have a great product, and so do most of our customers. The feedback to the new location has been great. The turnout from the community has been good. We have seen a lot of new and old faces in the new dining area."

Pepperoni and sausage remains the most popular pizza, he said.

"Our most popular subs are Italian and our Philly Cheese Steak, and our new cheeseburgers are killer," he said.

Spears said he thinks that the chain's Mom-and-Pop roots are the secret to the restaurant's successes.

"There's no comparison between a local place and a chain," he said. "Giovanni's, Gino's and Evaroni's all have their own unique distinct tastes that you aren't going to find at a national chain."
