Tropical Moon to open location in Barboursville

Mar. 15, 2012 @ 06:47 PM

BARBOURSVILLE -- Edwin Lake decided to open a frozen yogurt store in Huntington after he and his wife, Kim, made a habit of visiting Red Mango and Pinkberry franchises when they were traveling out of state.

The couple opened their first Tropical Moon shop in September 2011. Six months later, the Lakes are opening a second Tropical Moon location in Barboursville, along Champion Drive near Target. The new store is expected to open Friday, March 16.

"After we opened the first one, we had a number of locations in different areas in mind," said Edwin Lake, co-owner of the Tropical Moon stores. "We really liked the Barboursville area, and we liked this location. It has great parking and easy access off the interstate. We also like being associated with Target, Home Depot, Starbucks and all the other stores here. We looked at a number of different areas before we settled on this one."

He said a soft opening is planned for Friday, March 16.

"We will probably handle it like we did the Huntington location. We'll do a grand opening once we have things up and fully running," Lake said.

"We acquired this location on Feb. 6, and we've been working on it for a little over a month. Right now, we're finishing some countertops and glass tile on the walls. We're also moving in our chairs and tables before Friday. There are also some little things like putting up posters along the walls," Lake said. "We built this location on the same design as the store in Huntington. The new location will be larger, and we will have a total of 15 tables."

Like the original location, the Barboursville Tropical Moon will offer 12 flavors of soft-serve frozen yogurt. Customers can add a variety of toppings, including fresh fruit, sprinkles and candy. The finished creation is sold by the ounce. Yogurt pies and tarts as well as hot fudge brownies also will be sold.

"Our distributor offers a little over 80 flavors to choose from. We keep the anchor flavors vanilla, chocolate, the tart yogurts, etc., and we rotate the others every two weeks," Lake said. "Some of our popular flavors have included cake batter, raspberry and pomegranate raspberry. During Thanksgiving, we carried pumpkin, while in the Christmas season we had peppermint and eggnog. In the summer, we are going to introduce an apple pie-flavored yogurt."

Tropical Moon is located at 3016 Champion Drive near Gamestop. The spring hours of operation will be from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon until 8 p.m. Saturday. In the summer months, the hours will be expanded until 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 p.m. on Sunday.
