GOOD EATS: Knuckles Sandwich Shop to open second location
HUNTINGTON -- In the fall of 2007 Jarrod Queen opened Knuckles Sandwich Shop on 11th Street as a side job to playing in the local metal band The Black Knots.
After slowly cultivating a loyal customer base, Queen has decided to expand with a second restaurant located in the Flats On 4th Avenue.
Now, students downtown won't have to stray too far from campus to enjoy Queen's assortment of sandwiches like the Darling Dagmar and the Smooth Blues BBQ. The original Knuckles location is also known for its hot dogs after winning an award in 2008 from the West Virginia Hot Dog Blog (wvhotdogblog.blogspot.com) for being the best in downtown Huntington.
"My brother Teddy owns the Swiftwater Cafe in downtown Charleston," Queen said. "After I graduated from Marshall in 2004, I decided to stick around here and start my own business. I used to work at the Calamity Cafe, and I saw a vacancy for affordable, quality deli meat sandwiches. I wanted to make a menu that was eclectic with something for everybody. There's everything from a simple hot ham and cheese to a Cuban sandwich to a Caribbean jerk ham sandwich."
Sandwiches range in price from $4.50 to $7 for The Knuckle, a massive sandwich featuring an assortment of meats. A signature menu item is the Italian Grinder with Genoa salami, ham, capicola and provolone cheese, topped with lettuce, tomato, onion and an Italian vinaigrette for $5.99.
Another is the King of Queens, a club sandwich with ham, cracked peppercorn turkey, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and Dijon mustard. Hot dogs go for $1.49 and are topped with mustard, sauces, onions and slaw.
"I try to carry the highest quality of products," Queen said. "We keep nothing but high quality roast beef, honey roast ham and cracked peppercorn turkey. Everyone's been on board for that. What's been able to keep me in business for two years in a recession has been our regulars. Everyone who goes through seems to come back. Going on for two years, I've seen a lot of places close, but I keep on truckin'."
Another option is the pizza bread for $6.75, which is a French roll sliced and toasted with a garlic herb marinara, provolone cheese and pepperoni. Queen also offers a Cuban sandwich, which features pulled pork barbecue over ham with Swiss cheese, pickles and spicy mustard for $5.99. With a larger kitchen in the new location, Queen hopes to expand the menu to include buffalo wings and other appetizers.
"At the other location I had a lot of people who were working at the Robert C. Byrd Institute of Technology and a bunch of professionals in their mid-30s and 40s who liked the place's rock 'n' roll theme," Queen said. "Since I'm in a band, a lot of people come over to talk about music. I also have a lot of Marshall students. The coach of the Marshall rugby team owns this building where the new restaurant is. He asked me if we could work something out, and we did."
Knuckles Sandwich Co.'s new location is inside the Flats On 4th Avenue, 1415 4th Ave. Building residents will get 10 percent off all purchases.
Cash, check and all major credit/debit cards are accepted. It is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is closed Sunday. For a takeout order or more information, call 304-781-1201.
