Blackhawk Grille offers new tastes for fall

Oct. 20, 2011 @ 12:00 AM

BARBOURSVILLE -- First opening its doors in 2001, The Blackhawk Grille is one of the best known restaurants for fine dining in the area.

Well known for having an extensive wine list, fresh fish and steaks, the restaurant will be rolling out a new menu for the fall starting Monday, Oct. 24. Familiar favorites such as filet mignon, jumbo shrimp and handmade crab cakes will be returning while a host of new seasonal items will be available.

"The ingredients for the new menu is based on the season," said James Watterson, executive chef. "For fall we're going to be working with heartier ingredients such as butternut squash. We are also going to add a five grain wild rice to the sides. Some items like the grouper are going out of season, so for a fish item we are going to add a grilled cobia.

Watterson, who has been in the culinary industry for 12 years and started working with the Blackhawk Grille in March, said there will also be pumpkin cheesecake on the dessert menu.

"What we're trying to do is make our menu more affordable in these economic times without sacrificing quality," said Tim Barnes, general manager. "The prices on the new menu will reflect that. We are still finalizing the menu."

For Barnes the restaurant is a familiar location. He had his first job as a dishwasher way back in the 1980s when a restaurant called Gatzby's occupied the location.

"We will still be using fresh ingredients and homemade sauces," Barnes said. "We have fresh, not frozen, seafood and fine steaks."

There will be more items priced in the $20 range on the fall menu.

"We are also going to offer a new pasta," Watterson said. "It's a penne pasta with a fire roasted pomodoro sauce with Italian sausage and bell peppers. We are bringing back another item, a popular roasted red pepper and three cheese fondue which is an all-time favorite."

The Blackhawk Grille is located at 646 Central Ave., in Barboursville. It is open at 5 p.m. every Monday through Saturday and remains open until 10 p.m. or later based on demand.
