D.P. Dough offers late-night pizza alternative

October 15, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

Founded in 1987, the first store in the D.P. Dough chain opened its doors in Amherst, Mass., near the University of Massachusetts campus. Now the franchise, which dubs itself "the pizza alternative," has locations throughout the northeast, including one in downtown Huntington.

The chain is famous for being open in late hours of the night.

"We've been here almost three years. We opened our first store in March of 2007," Jaclyn Boylan, co-owner of the Huntington location, said. She runs the store with her husband, Matthew.

"The third one in the chain opened up near my hometown in Ithaca, N.Y. I worked there for three years before opening up a franchise in Morgantown, W.Va., in 1999," Matthew Boylan said.

The couple sold the Morgantown franchise and opened another one in Binghamton, N.Y.

"That didn't work out so well, and my wife who is from Morgantown wanted to come back to West Virginia," Matthew Boylan said. "So we decided to move to Huntington."

D.P. Dough offers a wide assortment of calzones with different fillings ranging from traditional Italian flavors such as pepperoni, buffalo chicken and hamburger. All calzones are available for $6.95, with a different special available each day for $5. One popular calzone is the "Combat Zone" featuring pepperoni, sausage, peppers, mushrooms and mozzarella. Another favorite is "The Speed Zone" with breaded chicken, spinach, garlic, mozzarella and ricotta cheeses. There is a wide assortment of steak calzones, vegetarian calzones and breakfast calzones filled with egg. You can even get a "Cinnamon Dusted Crust," a dessert calzone, similar to a turnover, filled with apple or cherry filling for $5.

The restaurant also offers a selection of salads ranging in price from $5.75 for a simple Caesar salad to $6.75 for a turkey club salad. Side items include French fries ($1.50 for a small, $3 for a large), potato salad ($2) and macaroni salad ($2). Customers can even takeout pints of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream.

"Salads are very big here. People love our salads." Jaclyn Boylan said. "We try to give people quite a large portion. Every time people get them people are surprised by how much is there."

Matthew Boylan also says the eatery's wings are very popular.

"Our wings are baked rather than fried, so they might be a little less unhealthy," he said.

The wings are available in hot, mild, barbecue and plain varieties. Orders of wings can be as small as six for $4.50 or as large as 48 for $29.

D.P. Dough is located at 833 6th Ave. at the historic Prichard Building. The restaurant delivers to most of downtown Huntington, and sometimes even further depending on the size of the order, with a minimum of a single calzone ($6.95) per order. Each Wednesday there is a special where customers can receive any two calzones for $10. Cash and most major credit/debit cards are accepted (no American Express). No checks are taken at this time. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. until 3 a.m. Mondays through Thursday and on 11 a.m. until 4 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
