Vic’s Ivy Cuisine ready for its 10th anniversary

Jun. 20, 2013 @ 08:35 AM

HUNTINGTON — One of downtown Huntington’s friendliest lunch spots is gearing up for its 10th anniversary.

It was nearly a decade ago when Vickie Goodson-Scott expanded on her catering business in 2003 to open up a small café called Vic’s Ivy Cuisine. Goodson-Scott had previously run a catering business out of her kitchen called Vic’s Artistic Catering for nearly 10 years. Vic’s Ivy Cuisine will officially celebrate its 10th anniversary in July.

“I already had a catering customer base when I opened up 10 years ago,” she said. “I didn‘t just open up on a whim. Some of these customers are ones who have stayed loyal for 20 years.”

Vic’s Ivy Cuisine offers a variety of salads, soups and sandwiches.  Every day the café also offers a daily special with two sides. These range from baked chicken to barbecue ribs.  Vickie is famous for grilling outside of the shop on Fridays in the summer months.

This month the café is offering a special on hamburgers (served on Texas Toast) starting at $4 and hot dogs for $1.50.

“Everything we make is special,” she said. “What makes it different is that we put a little love in our food. I give people the recipes all the time for things, and they say ‘mine taste like yours.’ I always say I put a little love in mine. I actually like what I do.”

Sandwiches on the menu include Grilled Chicken on Texas Toast ($6.25) and a Philly Steak Sub ($7.25). Customers can also enjoy the Greenbrier 5 Onion Soup ($3.25 cup, $4.25 bowl) and the Broccoli Delight Salad topped with Vic’s special sauce ($4.75).

The small restaurant has very much been a family business for Goodson-Scott and her family. Her son, Elliot Scott is a painter and art major at Shepherd University. The café is currently home to a small gallery of his work including pictures of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., actor Jack Nicholson and jazz musician Miles Davis.

“My son is doing some ‘green’ art over some recycled newspaper,” she said. “He did a collage of me on newspaper.  When I was younger I used to travel around the world with Pan Am. I was 23 years old when the photo it’s based on was taken. Later I started cooking so he incorporated the recipes in the collage. He also did a painting of my father while he was sleeping.”

Vic’s Ivy Cuisine still offers a thriving catering business offering options for receptions, weddings and private luncheons.  Customers looking for catering orders should call at least two days in advance.

Vic’s Ivy Cuisine is open for lunch Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Catering and private parties are available throughout the week. Cash, check and most major credit cards are accepted. For carry-out orders, catering options and more information, call 304-522-3303 or fax 304-522-1688.
