Crumpets & Tea perfect spot for light lunch
HUNTINGTON -- Located in Heritage Village, Crumpets & Tea is a cozy little tea room located next to a picture framing business.
The tea room is owned by Karen Shook and Trish Burns and is located next to Robert Jenkins' business, Custom Framing by Jenks. All three were regulars at the Berryhill Garden and Crafts center. After Berryhill Garden founder Janice Berry passed away, they decided to start a new business. Crumpets & Tea opened its doors Feb. 4.
Currently, the Tea Room is open to walk-ins from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. From Monday through Wednesday, the room is available for special events ranging from small parties to a private afternoon tea. The luncheon menu offered Thursday through Saturdays offers a choice of a chicken salad sandwich, chef salad, chicken quesadillas, quiche or beef stew. Vegetarian options are also available. All entrees include soup, salad, dessert and hot or cold beverages. A full lunch costs $10.
Co-owner Karen Shook moved to the area from Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
"Prior to my husband, Dale, and I coming to Huntington two years ago, we owned an establishment in New York," Shook said. "We owned an inn and conference center where we held lots of teas. I kept telling Trish how much fun they were and thought we should do something like that down here."
A second menu is available for those looking to arrange an afternoon tea on Monday through Wednesday. The afternoon tea features two courses. The first is savories such as cucumber sandwiches, crumpets and scones with cranberry spread. The second is sweets featuring chocolate hot fudge cake, fruit ambrosia and tea cookies. Afternoon tea goes for $12. Both menus will change seasonally.
"We have boxes, boxes and boxes of tea," Shook said. "We have black teas, herbal teas and green teas. We just got in the ingredients to make our own chai tea. Our chai is made with cardamom, cinnamon, loose tea and milk. If you have ever purchased chai tea, it tastes so much different when it's homemade."
"Everything we make is homemade," co-owner Trish Burns said. "We aren't going out and buying anything in stores. We make the chicken salad, and we make the quesadillas. We make the cookies and the hot fudge cake in the back."
Crumpets & Tea is located at Shop #2 at Heritage Village at 210 11th St. in downtown Huntington. It is open for walk-in luncheons from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. Special arrangements are available usually from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays. Cash, checks and most major credit/debit cards are accepted (no American Express).
