La Famiglia gears up for 2nd year of family food

HUNTINGTON -- A family-run Italian restaurant in Huntington is gearing up to celebrate its second anniversary this fall.

La Famiglia opened on Oct. 3, 2011. The small restaurant used to be a house. The name "La Famigilia" is Italian for family. It is run by owner Ralph Hagy who works with his wife Terri and sons Jordan and Joseph Hagy. Hagy decided to open a restaurant after retiring from working in the mining chemical industry. He also had a catering business before opening La Famigilia. Hagy said that the menu was inspired in part by a visit to his mother's hometown in southern Italy.

"When we first opened in 2011 we initially opened to be a deli," he said. "We pictured more of a fast-paced counter service restaurant. After a couple of months our customer base pushed us more to create a sit-down restaurant with a more defined menu. We started with different types of sandwiches and wood-fired pizzas. Everything is based around our wood-fired oven. We use imported flour from Italy and cheese from Rome for that. We also have a garden out front we use for tomatoes, peppers and herbs. We went through several renditions of our menu and listened to our customers on what they like and what they want us to provide for him."

The menu features a variety of "Mezzaluna" which are Italian flatbread sandwiches. These include the "Americano Pepperoni" ($11), homemade Italian sausage ($12), and "Mullberry Street Meatballs" ($12). There are also a wide variety of thin crust "Napolitano" style pizzas. Standouts include "the Margherita" ($13) topped with mozzarella, San Marzano tomatoes, and basil pesto and "Raphael" ($14), topped with homemade Italian sausage, San Marzano sauce, fresh mozzarella and sliced tomatoes.

The menu also features a mix of pastas including spaghetti and meatballs ($12.50) and rigatoni ($12.50). For dessert, customers can enjoy homemade gelato and pastries such as canola and biscotti. There is also selection of beers and wine.

"We do lasagna on every Saturday," Hagy said. "We also prepare it for groups that call in for it ahead of time. We did lasagna yesterday and it sold out in 15 minutes. The rigatoni with sausage and peppers is a huge seller for us. Within the next month we're hoping to start to produce our own fresh pasta."

The restaurant has remained closely affiliated with Marshall University hosting a variety of fundraisers for the Marshall Artists Series and other causes.

The restaurant also sold sausage sandwiches at the Rails and Ales festival last weekend.

La Famiglia is located at 1327 6th Ave. It is open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Dinner hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Cash and all major credit cards are accepted.
