El Ranchito seeks following in new location

Sep. 12, 2013 @ 03:59 PM

HUNTINGTON -- A popular local Mexican restaurant has opened a new location downtown and is hoping to find a loyal following on game day.

The new El Ranchito Bar & Grill across the street from Marshall University's Joan C. Edwards Stadium opened Aug. 31. The original El Ranchito opened it's doors on Hal Greer Boulevard in November of 2010. The new location on 3rd Avenue has a full service bar, a dance floor and room for private gatherings.

"We had to put in a little over $100,000 because we wanted to keep the bar but make it family friendly," said Luis Colin, manager of El Ranchito Bar and Grill. "This location had two bars, but we closed one down and we put some dividers to keep the dining area separate from the bar. We also installed some new tables. Others we just redid the tops of. We even had a customer from the Hal Greer restaurant come in and paint a mural for us.

"Some of our family members work in construction so they went in and did all the walls for us," he added. "We also had to have the inspectors come in and check everything out before we could open up. Our first day was August the 31st. We didn't have our liquor license yet, but our regular customers at Hal Greer wanted us to be there for the kick-off of football season. Now that we have our license and the bar in service, we expect to be very popular after home games."

The new location's full service bar features an assortment of draft beers including craft beers and imported Mexican "Cervezas" like Dos Equis. There is also wine and a assortment of cocktails such as daiquiris and margaritas.

The new location will also carry over El Ranchito's full menu featuring a wide selection of Mexican favorites like buritos, fajitas, tacos and tamales. One of the specialty items included is the Arroz Con Pollo which features rice, grilled chicken, and six different vegetables topped with queso cheese. There's also the El Pastor featuring grilled pork, pineapple, chorizo sausage and cheese and the Fajita Shrimp Taco Salad.

The menu also features a selection of hamburgers and sandwiches. One of the unique items is the Sincronizada a ham and cheese sandwich stuffed in a flour tortilla.

"Our family started getting in the restaurant business in the midwest, so we carried some menu items we learned over there here," Colin said. "My dad started in the restaurant at the very bottom and worked his way up. He started washing dishes, then worked as a cook in various restaurants before starting his own. He, my uncle and one of our friends started the El Ranchito on Hal Greer as the first one we owned. It was really busy so we decided to open one down here."

El Ranchito Bar and Grill is open from 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. The bar will be open as late as 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturdays depending on demand.

Cash and all major credit cards are accepted. For carry-out order or more information, call 304-525-3434 or fax 304-525-3435.
