No. 1 Kitchen offers area 2 locations

Apr. 25, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- There's a number of Chinese restaurants in the area but only one claims to be "No. 1."

After working in several restaurants throughout the area, owner Lin Chen decided to open his own restaurant in West Huntington in 2010. Chen has 17 years of experience in the restaurant business. Two years later Chen and his wife, Nancy, purchased a former Pizza Hut location and opened a second restaurant in East Huntington.

"I simply saw that the property in West Huntington was available, looked at it and contacted the owners," said Chen. "My wife Nancy now runs the store in West Huntington."

The second location opened in February of 2012. It took Chen three months to remodel the restaurant before opening up shop.

"This is New York style Chinese food," said Cris Cremeans, a cashier at No. 1. Kitchen. "Our General Tso's Chicken is probably the most popular item on the menu. People love it. Sweet and Sour Chicken is popular, Chicken and Broccoli is a big one, so is Crab Rangoon and Lo Mein. Of course egg rolls are a big seller. We also have our more exotic things on our chef's specials like crab legs and frog legs. We also have a dine-in only daily lunch special for $3.99. It's a good helping, and you won't leave hungry. It's available from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Everything we can make on the menu we can make spicy or less spicy if you can't take the heat."

Unlike many Chinese restaurants in the area that have a buffet format, No. 1 Kitchen is a sit-down restaurant with carryout and delivery options. Both restaurants feature family dinner specials ranging from two people ($12.95) to eight people ($49.95).

Chefs specials include Mongolian Beef ($8.50), Coconut Shrimp ($10.25), and Sesame Chicken ($8.35).

"We make Chinese food for American tastes," Chen said. "We want our food to be easy for the general public to eat. Though a lot of people still like chopsticks."

"We have what we think is the freshest Chinese food in town," added Cremeans. "Since we have two locations we have a monster-sized delivery radius. Our East Huntington store can deliver as far as below the mall in Barboursville, and our West Huntington store can go as far as Kenova."

The East Huntington location is located at 4341 U.S. 60 East. It is open from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursdays and from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. For delivery or carry-out orders, call 304-736-5668.

The West Huntington location is located at 1669 Washington Ave. It is open from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.

Cash and all major credit cards are accepted.
