Famous Frank’s eatery opens at Marshall
HUNTINGTON — Marshall University students and employees have a new place to grab a snack.
Opening its doors at the start of the spring semester, Famous Frank’s is now serving up a wide variety of hot dogs. The new hot dog stand has replaced one of the Ultimate Baja locations near the entrance of the Student Center.
“We chose to replace the Ultimate Baja here, as people weren’t visiting the location on this side in favor of the one in the food court,” said Frank Powers, a manager for Sodexo.
Powers is also the manager for Famous Frank’s.
“We talked to students before we put in a new restaurant. I got a lot of feedback from students looking for a lower-priced option. They also wanted something they could grab and go,” he said. “So, hot dogs made sense. Huntington is practically the hot dog king of the nation.”
He said the space closed over the winter break and reopened Jan. 3.
“Not many of the students were back, but we were able to get some feedback from the students and staff that ate,” he said. “It was a combined effort coming up with the logo and the menu. If this proves to be a success, we can add to the menu. The good thing about Franks is that we have so many types of toppings that if you don’t see something you like on the menu, you can always build your dog.”
Famous Franks has a variety of hot dogs available for under $2. These start at $1.69 for a “Plainy Frank.” Other signature dogs include the MU Frank ($2.19) topped with chili, spicy mustard and onions, plus the “Frankly a Southern BBQ” ($2.19) with bacon, barbecue sauce and grilled onions. The stand also has a Flamin’ Frank ($2.09) topped with Frank’s Red Hot Sauce, Jalapeno Peppers and Pepper Jack Cheese.
The menu also offers crinkle cut fries ($1.39), onion rings ($1.39) and loaded chili cheese fries ($3.49.)
“We’ve added a low-fat Turkey Dog to the menu for people who are more health conscious,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of people ask us about adding a veggie or soy dog as a meatless option. We have also had some people ask us if we are going to offer Kosher Franks, so it’s something we are looking into in the future.”
