Backyard Pizza adds mobile diner truck

Sep. 05, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- They might not be doing deliveries yet, but Backyard Pizza & Raw Bar is going mobile.

The downtown pizzeria, pub and raw bar now has its own food truck. The mobile dinner features a full pizza oven and made its debut at the Huntington Rails and Ales Festival. The new mobile dinner was also present at the Diamond Teeth Mary Festival, the Huntington Color Run and at a fundraiser for John Paul Kelley.

"I've always had a dream of having a food truck because it makes us mobile," Backyard owner Drew Hetzer said. "It's great marketing and great exposure for the town. People get to try our cuisine out of our space. I purchased a box trailer with stainless and aluminum diamond plate flooring. I cut out a window and put in a wood-fired oven like the one we have in our store. We have already booked some weddings. We are also going to be at KineticPark on Wednesdays throughout the fall from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In the future we would like to be at events like the Milton Pumpkin Festival, and we would like to go down near Marshall football games. We just got this thing rolling, and it's a really exciting time for us."

While the food truck includes a selection of Backyard's popular gourmet pizzas, to get the full experience you may want to make the voyage downtown. Backyard offers a variety of gourmet pizzas such as The Woo-Tang (topped with grilled chicken, bleu cheese crumbles, mozzarella, red peppers, diced jalapeño, red onion, cilantro and a honey/Siracha/lime sauce) and the Olde New York (topped with shredded and thick mozzarella cheese with a Italian tomato sauce). The restaurant also has an assortment of seafood including calamari, hickory grilled ahi tuna and scallops. The menu will also soon include ceviche, a South American seafood stew.

"All of our seafood here is great," Hetzer said. "We get some of the freshest seafood in town. Our oysters are usually three days from harvest. We get fresh seafood delivered to us on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. About 80 to 85 percent of our produce is local. We now have a lovely Caprese Salad with thick sliced beefsteak tomato, fresh mozzarella, fresh basil and a balsamic glaze tossed in olive oil. We are also offering a fresh in-house peach and blackberry cobbler."

Backyard has a full service bar with a mix of craft beers including local beers like West Virginia's Bridge Brew Works and imports like Germany's Ayinger Octoberfest.

Backyard has also started doing a Sunday brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"Our brunch menu is fantastic," Hetzer said. "We have French toast from brioche bread that we get from the River & Rail Bakery. We do a Belgian chocolate stuffed toast and a lemon ricotta stuffed French toast. We also have a list of breakfast pizzas like one with bacon, egg and cheese with a maple crust. We also have one called the Peggaroni with pepperoni, roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, scrambled eggs and sharp cheddar cheese."

Backyard Pizza and Raw Bar is located at 841 4th Ave., in Huntington. It is open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and for dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursdays. It is open all day on Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday brunch is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
