Slyce Pizza Company moves downtown

Sep. 12, 2012 @ 08:49 PM

HUNTINGTON -- Slyce Pizza Company moved to downtown Huntington last week from its former home on U.S. 60 to a new location on 4th Avenue.

The new business is at 1115 4th Ave., in the former home of Purple Earth Comics (now two doors down). The new store had a soft opening on Sept. 5.

"We were scouting new locations, and this is a great location downtown," said Tiffany Hatfield, new owner of Slyce. "This building was already set up for pizzas, so there wasn't a lot of work that needed to be done. We completely redid the floor, installed some new tables, and we took out the countertop, then put in a new bench seat for waiting. We repainted the walls, put up some light shades, and we installed a TV so people can come in to watch some Marshall games. I think business will be a little different down here as there's a lot of walk-by traffic. I'm expecting a busy crowd for lunch."

Slyce has a wide selection of pizzas including an All Meat Pizza, an Italian Meatball Pizza and a classic Margherita Pizza. One lucky customer even had a pizza named after her. Miss V's Supreme Pizza features pepperoni, beef, sausage, green peppers, onions and mushrooms topped with mozzarella cheese. All dough is hand-tossed, and all sauce is homemade.

Specialty pizzas range in price from $12.99 for a 12-inch small to $19.99 for an 18-inch large.

In addition to the pizzas, Slyce features a variety of hot and cold submarine sandwiches in 9- and 12-inch sizes. These include a meatball sub ($6.99 small, $8.49 large), a Philly cheese steak ($$6.99-$8.49), and pizza bread ($4.99, $6.99). There are also calzones starting at $8.99 and turnovers.

"We've taken a few things off the menu that weren't big sellers and added a few things," Hatfield said. "I think one of the most popular things will be our Pizza Burger. It's a quarter-pound hamburger patty, wrapped in pizza dough, our homemade sauce, pepperoni, banana peppers, onions and cheese."

Hatfield, a former waitress at the old location, thinks the new venue will help Slyce make inroads with local businesses. "We are going to try and hit all the businesses in walking distance as well as the hospitals," she said. "We are planning to have a discount for Marshall University students. Officers in uniform will also receive a discount. There is a lot of competition downtown, but I think our staff is super friendly and that will make a big impact on people. Our food is excellent. We have always had a lot of regulars and I think we will have a lot more."

Slyce Pizza will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 a.m. Monday through Friday and from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Cash and most major credit cards are accepted.
